CES develops Combiner Head-up Display for Rail Vehicles

With the combiner head-up display, we are taking a major step towards greater safety  in urban road transport – as tram drivers can focus their full attention on what is happening on the road. In doing so, you not only have sight of the road and cockpit ads at once, the information also appears in the same perceived distance.

This is especially helpful, when trams operate in heavy and frequently challenging inner-city traffic, an environment in which the number of unprotected road users is increasing: More people are cycling or riding e-scooters or compact electric mopeds. Moreover, many road users allow themselves to be distracted by their cell phones. According to information from different transport services, this has resulted in an increasing number of accidents, including those involving trams.

“With the development of a head-up display for trams, we are taking a major step toward greater safety in urban rail transport,” explains Dr. Christoph Falk-Gierlinger, General Manager of CES. 

The new head-up display is suitable for newly developed rail vehicles as well as a retrofit solution for existing models. Further fields of application are conceivable in the future – the technology can also be used in long-distance trains.

In addition to the innovative head-up display, other Continental systems technology solutions contribute to urban road safety: for example, a driver condition monitoring system that uses camera to keep the driver in view, or a collision warning system that is directed towards the driver or towards the side.
